Call for movies
Nel 2010 cade il ventennale dalla scomparsa di Diego Carpitella, fondatore dell’Etnomusicologia italiana e tra i primi fautori e promotori dell’Antropologia visiva in Italia. L’intensa attività scientifica da lui dedicata a quest’ultimo ambito di studio non è facilmente riassumibile; per darne sinteticamente conto basti qui ricordare le innumerevoli occasioni di incontro da lui promosse sotto l’auspicio dell’Associazione Italiana di Cinematografia Scientifica della quale è stato per anni presidente, come Le giornate del film etnografico italiano a Roma, i seminari/rassegna Materiali di antropologia visiva, in collaborazione con il Museo Nazionale delle Arti e Tradizioni Popolari di Roma, la Rassegna internazionale di documentari cinematografici e televisivi in collaborazione con l’Istituto Superiore Regionale Etnografico di Nuoro. Tra le sue realizzazioni audiovisive basti ricordare i film di ricerca sulla cinesica culturale e le collane cinematografiche “I suoni” e “Musica e Identità Video”, prodotte rispettivamente dalla RAI e dalla Discoteca di Stato.
Sulla base di una comune quanto differente esperienza di formazione con Diego Carpitella, Laura Faranda, Francesco Giannattasio, Giovanni Giuriati e Antonello Ricci propongono di riattualizzare quella intensa stagione di ricerca e di studio, riprendendo la formula degli incontri di discussione con proiezioni: una formula memorabile, che ha dato luogo a vivaci scambi di esperienze e di punti di vista e che è stata a più riprese reinterpretata dallo stesso Carpitella.
Nel prossimo mese di novembre 2010 avrà dunque luogo presso “Sapienza” Università di Roma il Convegno-Rassegna MAV 2010, articolato in tre giornate. La prima giornata avrà per tema la figura e l’opera di Diego Carpitella con interventi di specialisti e con la proiezione di suoi documentari. Nelle altre due giornate si alterneranno proiezioni di filmati e tavole rotonde di discussione a tema con relatori e autori dei film in rassegna.
A questo fine, quanti fossero interessati a inviare una proposta di produzione di antropologia visiva, della durata di circa 20’ e in formato DVD, potranno spedire direttamente il proprio documento al seguente indirizzo:

Call for Invited Paper and Poster Sessions (Deadline March 1, 2010) -

The deadline for consideration as a SVA invited session is coming up!
Invited paper/poster session proposals must be submitted by email to
the SVA Program Chairs by March 1, 2010.

The benefits of invited status include: 1) guaranteed acceptance into
the program (no waiting until August!); 2) priority consideration for
the more “desirable” time slots during the meeting; and 3) promotion
within the program as an invited session.

What we require is what AAA requires:
Title of Session
Session Abstract (500 words max)
List of Participants (including roles-organizer, chair, discussant,
presenter-as applicable)
Individual Paper/Poster Abstracts (250 words max)

We understand that sessions may not be completely formalized yet at
this point, but in order for your session to receive the fullest
consideration, please send as much information as you can about the
confirmed participants, paper titles, and abstracts. We will review
all the submissions and make recommendations to the board. Those
proposals whose themes closely match the topic of “Circulation,” or
specific issues in Visual Anthropology will probably be given
preference, although we are also interested in innovative topics! If
you think that your session would be of interest to another AAA
section, feel free to suggest a few (2-3) other sections for
co-sponsorship (although we cannot guarantee anything, unfortunately).

Poster sessions are strongly encouraged to seek invited status! We
would very much like to increase the presence of posters as a means of
visual research and presentation at the Annual Meeting.

Roundtables need not be submitted for invited status at this time; the
roundtables that are selected for the program will automatically
received invited status from the AAA program committee. If you are
planning a roundtable, please follow the regular AAA online submission
deadline of April 1, 2010.

The sessions chosen for “invited” status will be notified in
mid-March, and session organizers MUST formally submit complete
session information using the online system by the general AAA
deadline of April 1, 2010.

Registration will open in summer 2010. The world is ever “on the move”-

The opportunities and challenges of both real and virtual travel are very much at the heart of the emergent interdisciplinary field of mobilities, which deals with the movement of peoples, objects, capital, information and cultures across an increasingly globalised and apparently borderless world. In the practices, processes and performances of moving – whether for voluntary leisure, forced migration or economic pragmatism – we are faced with the negotiation and re-negotiation of identities and meaning relating to places and pasts. Within the increasing complexities of global flows and encounters, intercultural skills and competencies are being challenged and re-imagined. The vital role of languages and the intricacies of intercultural dialogue have largely remained implicit in the discourses surrounding mobilities. This Conference seeks to interrogate the role of intercultural communication and of languages in the inevitable moments of encounter which arise from all forms of motion.This international and interdisciplinary event is the 10th anniversary conference of the International Association of Languages and Intercultural Communication (IALIC) and is being organised in association with the Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change. Through this event we aim to bring together many of the sub-themes of previous IALIC conferences and to focus upon the issues of culture, communication and translation in a mobile world, including: languages and intercultural communication in local and global education, tourism, hospitality, migration, translation, real and virtual border-crossings.

We are pleased to receive 20 –minute research papers or descriptions of pedagogical practice which address or go beyond the following themes:

Moving languages – continuities and change;

Real and virtual border crossings;

Tourist encounters and communicating with the other;

Tourism’s role in inter-cultural dialogue;

The languages of diasporas and diasporic languages;

Dealing with dialects and the evolution/dissolution of communities;

Hospitality and languages of welcome;

Learning the languages of migration;

Lingusitic boundaries and socio-cultural inclusions and exclusions;

Located and dislocated languages and identities;

Practices and performances of translation.

Il libro: Cinque piante americane, patate, fichidindia, fagioli, mais e pomodori, hanno rivoluzionato, in cinquecento anni, i sistemi agro-alimentari europei.
Questo libro ricostruisce gli appassionanti percorsi storici, geografici e gastronomici delle piante americane nell’isola, un fenomeno di globalizzazione ante litteram. Nelle zone montane, si diffonde, a partire dall’Ottocento, la patata che rende ancora più variegata l’alimentazione pastorale sarda ricca di carne e di prodotti dei boschi, mentre nei climi caldi e secchi delle pianure regna incontrastato il grano. In Ogliastra la patata diventa la base dell’alimentazione, come nel Campidano lo è il pane. Le Barbagie di Ollolai e di Seulo, assieme ad alcuni paesi della Barbagia, diventano grandi produttori di patate per l’esportazione. La Sardegna è stata tra le prime regioni italiane ad aver incorporato il pomodoro nel sistema agro-alimentare senza fare concorrenza al grano, al quale si opponevano invece le patate e il mais. Il ficodindia, frutto ordinario e accessibile a tutti, un tempo cibo per bestiame, siepe per i campi chiusi, oggi diventa di nuovo un frutto esotico, raro e costoso, nel circuito della distribuzione cittadina. Ogni zona del’’isola aveva le proprie specialità agro-alimentari secondo precisi itinerari: rotte del vino, dell’olio, del grano e del pesce, alle quali, dopo la scoperta dell’America, si aggiungono le nuove piante esotiche diventate presto simboli della cucina mediterranea.

Autore: Alessandra Guigoni è dottore di ricerca in metodologie della ricerca etnoantropologica; collabora con la cattedra di Antropologia culturale dell’Università di Cagliari e con quella di Etnologia dell’Università di Genova, occupandosi prevalentemente di antropologia dell’alimentazione. Ha al suo attivo una cinquantina di pubblicazioni tra libri e articoli, tra cui il volume Saperi e sapori del Mediterraneo (2006) pubblicato per i tipi delle Edizioni AM&D. Gestisce da 11 anni il sito etnografia.it.

This inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary
project seeks to engage and explore the cultural
significance and enduring narratives within the
realm of the Gothic in culture at large. From its
literary and historical roots to its (post)modern
incarnations as a cultural subgenre present in
popular fiction and film, this project seeks to
explore the territories of the Gothic in all of
its manifestations.

300 word abstracts should be submitted by Friday
27th November 2009. If an abstract is accepted for
the conference, a full draft paper should be
submitted by Friday 12th March 2009.

What can we learn from children traversing the liminal and transient time-space of migration? How do migrant children and their caretakers navigate
educational systems in Europe today? How is it to be captive in an inner city classroom? How do children’s body language and verbal dominant languages
interface? How does a child become mediator between their family and the educational institutions? This anthropologically grounded study, integrated by
ethnographic film excerpts and based on a culturally-reflexive approach to the use of media in the research practices, explores the transcultural
experience of migrant children between 6 and 13 years, by closely analysing the particular codes, rhythms and practices of educational systems in Ireland
and France. The children’s experiences are represented in both the film sequences and the written text, in the form of their personal, shared viewpoints
about cultural diversity, biographical accounts and social practices in the family and at school. These are experiences which they have worked through,
from a time preceding migration and to the present. The film captures the sensibilities of migrant children and invites the reader/viewer to embark on these
somewhat uneven paths.
